Manny Pacquiao defeated Miquel Cotto via TKO on Round 12 and won the WBO Welterweight Championship belt.

Manny Pacquiao said on the interview courtesy of Sports Live Blogger:

“Our plan and strategy for the fight is not to hurry. You know, take time. I’m trying to test his power. In the early round I’m trying to get his in the body and in the head. I’m looking for a knock out shot that’s why I didn’t throw a lot of punches. You know, in the last minute I gave a few punches. That’s why I heard. I heard that he was bigger than me and was stronger than me. I tried my best to knock him out in the last round. I thought in the 11th round that they will stop the fight.”

Round 1: Cotto jabs. Three times. All land. Cotto throws a hook. The crowd chants Manny, then, Cotto. Three Pacquiao jabs fall short. Cotto counters with a grazing left. Cotto drills a three-punch combination, once to the body. Cotto lands a left to the head. Cotto moves in behind his jab. Three Cotto jabs and a left to the body. Another Cotto jab to the head lands. Round 5: Pacquiao's speed, power and elusiveness are impressive. The crowd chants the challenger's name. Cotto moves in behind his jab. Pacquiao appears to be timing him. Pacquiao wobbles Cotto again. Cotto continues to move forward and go to the body. Pacquiao appears to be setting up the champion. Too fast. Round 6: Cotto comes forward behind his jab again. Pacquiao goes to the body and head, the latter, with two right hands. Pacquiao comes forward and nails Cotto along the ropes. In the middle of the ring, Pacquiao's lead left is twice effective. Cotto is flinching in anticipation of punches that he doesn't appear to be able to see coming. Cotto backs up, and Pacquiao pursues, nearly putting Cotto down with a right along the ropes. The fighters exchange, evenly, to close the round. Pacquiao's round, 10-9

Round 7: Pacquiao opens the round with a 10-punch assault. Cotto covers, yet he still is being battered. A lead left to the body backs up Cotto. Round 8: Pacquiao meets Cotto in the center of the ring. Pacquiao leads with the left and lands it twice. Pacquiao seems ready to go for the kill. But Cotto lands a nice jab. Pacquiao is undeterred, missing wildly with three volleys. Cotto is on his toes. Pacquiao lands three left hooks and a right. On the ropes, Cotto takes another three-punch combination. Round 9: Cotto bravely meets Pacquiao in the center of the ring and begins to jab, but tables turn quickly as Pacquiao corners him and drills him with about 10 punches along the ropes. A three-punch combination staggers Cotto, and referee Kenny Bayless looks ready to step in, as he breaks the fighters. Cotto is bloody and ready to go as he dances away. Round 10: Cotto is simply surviving, jabbing as much to keep Pacquiao off of him as to win. Pacquiao stays in his face, firing his right jab, and looking as fresh as the first round. Pacquiao takes a deep breath and drops his hands, but Cotto doesn't take advantage. Cotto jabs twice, but takes a two-punch, and then, a three-punch combination along the ropes before the bell. Round 11: The crowd chants Pacquiao's name to start the round. Pacquiao moves in behind his jab. Cotto's trunks are red with his own blood. Trapped in Pacquiao's corner, Cotto takes a seven-punch combination. Cotto continues to back-peddle in survival mode. Pacquiao drills two right hands home. Pacquiao drops his hands at the end of the round as if to say, "Fight me." Pacquiao's round, 10-9

Round 12: The crowd chants Pacquiao's name, and after a hard left hand is delivered that drives Cotto to the ropes, referee Kenny Bayless quickly steps in, cradles Cotto and waves an end to the fight to prevent more punishment. The end results from the Pacquiao vs. Cotto boxing fight developed after a 6 round cut to Cotto. The Manny Pacquiao Miguel Cotto boxing fight results changed after puffing developed in Cotto’s eye during the half way point of last night’s fight.

For the 1/4 million readers who stayed with LALATE last night for round by round numbers, the fight scoring was close in early rounds with Cotto and Pacquiao splitting the cards.

But in round 3 and 4, Cotto went down twice, costing him on the numbers. By the 11th, his family was leaving the arena as he face turned into a bloody mess.

Here again is the recap.

Cotto had come out strong in rounds 1 through 6. Miguel clearly won the first round with consistent body jabs. In round 2, Manny came to the plate, picking up the speed while Cotto stuck with the jab. Round 2 was 10-9 Pacquiao.

In Round 3 and 4, Cotto went down each time, loosing 10-8 to Pacquiao who used uppercuts with combos. In round 5, Cotto started to weaken, Manny going to combos, Manuel loosing strength, but points on the round to Cotto.

With Pacquiao dominating on points, in Round 7 and 8, Cotto’s eye damage worsened, Cotto loosing more stream, both rounds scoring 10-9 Pacquiao.

Finally, in Round 9, the match was effectively over, but Cotto’s corner would never end it. Cotto was up against the ropes, eye problems, receiving consistent jabs of Pacquiao. 10-9 Pacquiao.

By the 10th, Cotto’s face is a mess, Manny still has the speed. 10-9 Pacquiao.

By the 11th, the fight clearly should be stopped but wasn’t. Cotto’s wife and son left the arena. Blood was flying. Cotto was no longer fighting, he was just trying to last. 10-9 Pacquiao.

Cotto’s corner should have stopped it at the end of the 11th. Finally referee Kenny Bayless stopped it in the 12th.

MANILA - Boxing champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao sealed his lips on the issue romantically linking him to actress Krista Ranillo.

"No comment ako diyan," said the pound-for-pound King in an interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com before he went to Las Vegas for his upcoming fight with Miguel Cotto this November 14 at MGM Grand.

Pacman’s words stemmed from reports that he was spotted dating Ranillo not only in the country but also in Hong Kong.

"Saan nanggaling yon? No comment ako diyan," Pacquiao said.

Meanwhile, in an interview with ABS-CBN News, Ranillo through her manager Arnold Vegafria broke her silence on the said issue saying that she and Pacquiao are just friends.

"For now, as I spoke to her she said that they are good friends and they are going out together as group. that's all I know," Vegafria said.

Vagafria said that Pacquaio will certainly be link to Ranillo since they are doing the movie "Wapakman."

"They are doing a movie together. Krista and two of my artists are his leadig ladies si Krista and Bianca King... I think this is also part of the promo I don't know what's the purpose of this going on with Manny Pacquiao but we will see I will talk to Krista when she comes back," the manager said.

The manager also confirmed that the sultry actress will be in Las Vegas to watch Pacquiao’s fight as a sign of her support.

"She asked for a break for a couple of days and at the same time. I asked her if she's going to watch Pacquiao? she said 'I might go there with friends,'" he said.

Vegafria added that Ranillo is happily single since she broke up with her former boyfriend about three months ago. He also said that Ranillo is aware of the intrigues linking her to Pacquiao.

"She's very aware of what's happening but she just laughed at it and I spoke to her if it’s not true just deny it. Sabi niya sa akin Manny is a married man and hindi siya pwdeng makisali so ganoon, hanggang friends lang," Vegafria said.

A side report that aired on a Sunday showbiz-oriented show touched on rumors linking Krista Ranillo to pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao.

Entertainment journalist Jobert Sucaldito said on “The Buzz” last Nov. 8 that Jinkee, Manny’s wife, is so jealous of Krista that she is reportedly thinking of canceling her trip to Las Vegas for Manny’s match with Miguel Cotto.

Jobert added that his source confirmed Manny and Krista are in a relationship.

Mommy Dionisia Pacquiao disproved the rumor in her interview with Kris Aquino.

“'Yong mga intriga, hayaan na lang natin. Unang sumisikat ang anak ko dahil sa kagalingan niya. ‘Wag kang maniwala,’ sabi ko kay Jinkee,” said Mommy D.

Jinkee flew to Las Vegas in the morning of Nov. 9. She said she did not bring her kids along because they have school.

Couple Regine Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid announced that they are attending Ogie’s ex-wife Michelle Van Eimeren’s wedding with Mark Murrow this month.

Asked if they are planning to tie the knot soon, Regine said some matters still need to be settled.

Top boxing columnist King J had the honor of interviewing Team Pacquiao at the Wild Card Boxing gym in Los Angeles on Oct. 30, just two weeks before the biggest fight of the year: Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto.

The highly anticipated super mega fight is taking place on Nov. 14, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. King J asked for predictions on the upcoming fight from trainer Buboy Fernandez, Manny’s brother Bobby Pacquiao, Manny’s advisor Michael Koncz, and of course the legendary three time trainer of the year, head trainer Freddie Roach. King J asked Roach everything, from the recent HBO 24/7 drama, an official prediction of the Pacquiao vs. Cotto fight, Manny’s workout routine, to training UFC legends Andrei Arlovski, Anderson Silva, and BJ Penn.

The following is a transcription of the interview with Roach.

King J: First of all how are you doing?

Freddie Roach: Everything’s good. Long day a little tired. I did 15 rounds of mitts with Manny Pacquiao and 10 right after that with Amir Khan so they keep me busy.

KJ: Nice. What would you say out of 100 percent is Manny both mentally and physically at this point?

FR: 95

KJ: Nighty-five percent both mentally and physically despite what the media is saying with all the distractions?

FR: We have distractions all the time, some me and Manny drive off of. Does distractions give us problems? No. We train every day, work every day, we work through typhoons, we do what we have to do.

KJ: Yes sir. I recall you said initially it would be a competitive fight and probably go almost the distance and then more recently you said Manny is going to blow away Cotto early on.

FR: The way Manny is punching right now in training camp and his power at this weight. I’ve never seen him hit harder. I feel he is going to knock Cotto out.

KJ: Can you give us a round sir?

FR: I am going to bet…one, nine, and 10.

KJ: Wow. Yeah you have been very, very great at picking the rounds. I remember you picked the David Diaz fight to the round. You also said you would be surprised if the fight with Ricky Hatton goes past the second round, and we all know how that story ended [laughs].

FR: Three...I did say three(Freddie smiles and holds up three fingers).

KJ: If you do not mind me asking, is your relationship with Manny as strong as can be, or was that a lot of HBO hype or are you able to comment on that?

FR: Oh no we had a little problem the day I wanted to leave with that typhoon and Manny came to his senses and called me at midnight that night and we hit the road. Luckily we did get out cause the typhoon did hit three days later and they did close down the roads again. We all had the attitude it’s not going to hit us. But it was real, and I felt I had a large responsibility with HBO being there, my sparring partners, and all the guys so I felt the safest thing was to get out and away from the storm. That was the decision that I made and by midnight Manny came to the same conclusion. I told him its midnight its late and to wait till the crack of down and he said no lets leave now so he left at midnight.

KJ: So that was pretty real then. Pretty accurate?

FR: Oh it’s all real. There’s nothing fake in that show. Nothing scripted.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto: What Will Manny’s Excuse be When he Loses?

By Manuel Perez: I can already see the excuses flowing in from Manny Pacquiao and his loyal trainer Freddie Roach after November 14th. I’d like for it to be some straight honest excuses where Pacquiao and Roach admit that they fought a superior fighter with better talent, power and ability than him. But what I expect will be some lame excuses along the lines of ‘I wasn’t feeling good in training camp, I hurt my shoulder or I couldn’t see because of the cut.’

I really hope that Pacquiao takes his loss like a man and doesn’t come up with the excuses after the fact but I just don’t see it happening that way. A whole bunch of people who don’t know what they’re talking about are predicting that Pacquiao is going to beat Cotto on November 14th. I’m really laughing at them because I haven’t seen so many wrong people in all my life.

This is going to be really nice to see Pacquiao eating a big plate of humble pie. I hope he swallows all of it because I don’t want him with any false hopes about the loss. There’s one thing that fighters need to accept is responsibility for their losses. The worse thing they can do is start coming up with the excuses after the fact. A tell tale sign of a fighter not accepting their defeat is when they start with the excuses and want to fire their trainer.

I doubt that Pacquiao will fire Roach after Cotto fight, at least I hope he doesn’t. But I still see Pacquiao making with the excuses for the loss. It’s so sad. I hope Pacquiao doesn’t resort to this. I don’t want to lose respect for the man and I think I would if Pacquiao starts blabbering left and right with every excuse under the son to explain away his loss. I can just see him going motor mouth while being interviewed.

It will be a terrible sight if he does this. Just accept the loss, Pacquiao, and take your defeat with dignity. I’m okay with the “It just wasn’t my night” excuses, but I can’t stomach when fighters start crying about injuries, poor training camps or other things that took place during the fight. If Pacquiao can’t beat Cotto in the ring, the last thing I want to hear is a bunch of lame excuses.

A loss to Cotto won’t be such a bad thing. At least Pacquiao know where he’s at in terms of talent. It’s better to know how good you are in reality rather than having a mental image in your head that isn’t true. Once Cotton finishes beating the tar out of Pacquiao, his self image will be adjusted to the point where he has a more accurate picture of his true ability – I hope.

If Pacquiao starts with the excuses then that tells me that he hasn’t accepted the loss and is looking for a scapegoat for target to put the blame on. There’s nothing wrong with losing. Pacquiao shouldn’t worry about it when it happens. It’s part of the game and every fighter has to accept it and not try to explain it away with excuses.

By Manuel Perez: After watching HBO’s Pacquiao-Cotto 24/7 episode 2 last Saturday night, I couldn’t help but notice how disengaged Manny Pacquiao appeared to be while preparing for his November 14th fight with World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Miguel Cotto. Not only did Pacquiao look distracted as he one person after another vying for his attention, but Pacquiao also was getting pummeled in his sparring session with Shawn Porter.

This is really bad. I was hoping that Cotto would be facing a motivated and well trained Pacquiao, but the way Manny looks now, he’s going to get mowed down if he goes in the ring looking that. Pacquiao looks like he’s going to the gallows as the days draw closer to his epic fight with Cotto. I can’t remember seeing a more demotivated fighter in all my days. Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, tried to give Pacquiao a pep talk after an especially bad sparring session but Pacquiao wasn’t meeting his eyes and didn’t seem to be attentive to what Roach was saying to him.

Roach let Pacquiao walk away without making sure that he understood what he had been telling him. I couldn’t believe it as I watched the whole scenario. Roach needed to make sure that Pacquiao was following what he was saying. I would have asked Pacquiao, “Do you understand me?” Roach is a nice guy and all, but he needs to be more assertive with Pacquiao because he’s not firm enough with the Filipino star.

I would have gotten in Pacquiao’s face and jammed him up for the way that he sparred with Porter. He looked really bad. Not only that, I’d have Pacquiao toeing the line. There wouldn’t be any basketball games or singing on television programs. God that was some awful singing if you ask me. Sounded like a wounded hound dog. The HBO 24/7 camera men could have done well to leave that bit out of the telecast.

Frankly, the entire episode 2 was painfully boring to watch, worse than any other 24/7 I’ve seen before. That’s saying a lot, because I’ve seen some really bad 24/7 episodes in the past couple of years. It seems like the whole bunch of them were sleep walking through the entire episode. What was especially sickening was the different players trying to curry favor with Pacquiao, as if he were some kind of king. I could never do that myself.

I’d give Pacquiao the straight talk and tell him to quit with the singing and make him ignore the boxing fans that are all over him trying to meet him. I’d have him with blinders on out in the some god forsaken place putting him through a torturous training camp that he’d never forget. Pacquiao might hate me afterwards, but at least he’d win the fight against Cotto. But the way that Pacquiao’s training camp appears to be going, I don’t give him a chance in hell of winning.

Pacquiao looks spaced out, distracted by something and not focused on Cotto. I don’t see any real training going on. Roach needs to have Pacquiao wired for this fight, but instead Pacquiao looks like a zombie, distracted and not tuned in. That’s too bad because it looks like Pacquiao is going to get a beating of his life against Cotto. I feel sorry for Pacquiao.

For those of us who are familiar with Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto, we know that these two warriors don’t need to hype up a fight with their mouth, even though they are men of few words their fists do the talking.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a good con artist, when it comes to selling us a fight, he can fool the public into believing the hype he promises us fireworks but gives us duds, yet many still pay for his fights in hope that someone will be able to shut his mouth.

The moment Floyd Mayweather Jr. loses, his stock will take a major drop, he knows this and this is why he carefully chooses who he faces. He knows if he gets beat not many will care to watch him anymore.

Perhaps the winner of Miguel Cotto vs. Manny Pacquiao will be the next opponent to take on Money Mayweather. We all know for Mayweather Jr. legacy doesn’t matter to him, the fight doesn’t make sense unless he can get the most money with the least amount of risk.

I have no problem with a man making the most money he can, but when they proclaim to be the greatest and speak the loudest, yet have no desire to fight the toughest fighters the fans want to see, that really turns me off.

Muhammad Ali claimed to be the greatest but he backed it up by fighting the best with no excuses. Floyd Mayweather Jr, is no Ali, Floyd Mayweather Jr. would probably respond to that with his predictable “You are right, Ali has losses and I don’t, Ali ain’t on my level”. Ali has losses cause he challenged himself and fought the best out there, just because you have a loss doesn’t mean you suck, this is boxing anything can happen.

With Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto they also want to make the most money they can, but they also care about their legacy and pleasing the fans . They realize the fans who order their fights are the ones paying their bills.

As fans we are the boss, we dictate who we want to see fight and we are the ones who pay our hard earned money to watch and support these fighters.

I will be watching on Nov. 14th and paying for the HBO Pay Per View fight between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto. I will be paying the $54.95 because both men have something to prove and both men have honor to defend. But most of all, both men fight for the love of the sport and the legacy that will live long after them.

Mayweather/Marquez vs. Pacquiao/Cotto Could Be the Fight of 2009

Though it’s been an interesting year in boxing to this point, by far the most important fight of the year – Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton – was a mismatch, consequential only because of the stunning way in which Pacquiao won, a savage knockout that created a crossover buzz around the mighty Filipino and solidified his stature as an international superstar.

As far as the Fight of the Year in 2009 goes right now, my choice is the Juan Manuel Marquez/Juan Diaz lightweight title fight from back in February. That was a thrilling contest, no doubt, with the smaller Marquez dominated early before solving (and cutting) Diaz in the middle rounds and ultimately earning a hard-fought stoppage in the ninth.

Still, compared to the heroic FOY’s of recent vintage – the Israel Vazquez/Rafael Marquez fights, Pavlik/Taylor I, Corrales/Castillo I – Marquez/Diaz seems just a little thin in both content and narrative to be remembered as the definitive fight of 2009.

Of course, there are two gigantic fights looming on the fall schedule, each with narrative out the proverbial wazoo. The oddsmakers will tell you that neither of these bouts will prove FOY material once they hit the ring, and though I’m not entirely sold on that opinion, I at least can see where it’s coming from. In any case, recent news has me thinking that the real of fight of 2009 will not be any one bout taken on its own, but rather a bout that features bout-on-bout, the epic contest that is shaping up to be Mayweather/Marquez vs. Pacquiao/Cotto.

In a telephone press conference yesterday to announce the Mayweather/Marquez undercard (a pretty damn good undercard as well), the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Richard Schaefer, fired the first official shot of this upcoming battle when he said that “This is certainly, without a doubt, going to be the biggest pay-per-view event of the year.” He was adamant that Mayweather/Marquez would outsell the Pacquiao/Cotto fight and even went so far as to suggest that it had the potential to outsell the 2007 De La Hoya/Mayweather fight, which right now, at 2.4 million PPV buys, is the most lucrative fight in the history of boxing.

Strong words, indeed. Across the internet yesterday, Schaefer’s comments were met with widespread derision by boxing fans along the lines of the old “dude, are you high?” variety. On the whole, the buzz generated among boxing heads by Pacquiao/Cotto, scheduled for November 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, has dwarfed that generated by Mayweather/Marquez, scheduled for September 19 in the same arena. Even though Floyd has been away from the ring for almost two years, most people feel like his fight with Marquez is a mismatch merely because of the size differential involved. The bout is being contested at a catch-weight of 144 pounds, and while Mayweather has fought comfortably as a welterweight (and once as a junior middleweight), Marquez has only fought above 130 pounds twice, and he looked small in his fight with Juan Diaz as a lightweight. Though no one in the boxing community disrespects Marquez’s renowned skills, the idea that he can jump two weight classes to beat a fighter as resourceful and disciplined as Mayweather seems like the longest of long shots. Throw in the fact that Marquez has never been a big box-office draw, and that both men are devoted counter-punchers, and you have the potential for not only a mismatch, but a tactical one that is less than exhilarating and that fails to capture the imagination of the public.

Compare that to Pacquiao/Cotto. Pacquiao is a heavy favorite in that fight, but not in nearly the same way that Mayweather is over Marquez, not among boxing pundits anyway. Despite his destruction of Oscar De La Hoya last December, many questions remain about Pacquiao’s ability to fight as a welterweight (or near-welterweight – he’ll face Cotto at a 145-pound limit), especially against a big welterweight like Cotto in the prime of his career and possessing proven speed and very heavy hands. Add to that drama the fact that Cotto is a much bigger star than Marquez, along with the furor that still surrounds Pacquiao following his destruction of Hatton, and you have a fight that on paper promises to be an infinitely bigger draw than Mayweather/Marquez.

For myself, however, I see at least the possibility for an upset in this contest. The question for me is not about the drawing power of Pacquiao/Cotto. That fight will do big numbers, without a doubt. For me the question is about Mayweather/Marquez, and its potential between now and fight night to make up the differential in anticipation that currently exists between the two events.

The main avenue for that will be a familiar one, I think: HBO’s 24/7 series. Mayweather/Marquez 24/7 premieres on August 29, and it may be the most important edition of the lot thus far, because to my mind it has the most riding on it in terms of how it can influence the relative success or failure of a fight. Mayweather has been the breakout star of the 24/7 franchise since it debuted in the spring of 2007, and one could argue that 24/7 made him the star he is today (and vice versa, actually). Floyd is unquestionably great television, as are his curmudgeonly and villainous father, Floyd Sr., and his uncle/trainer, Roger. These three have made for the most compelling 24/7 material by far, and to push the Mayweather/Marquez promotion out of the doldrums in which it currently dwells into the pay-per-view ether, they’re going to have to bring their A-games to this latest incarnation of the series.

Of course, they’ve already suffered a setback on that front – Roger’s recent, grisly run-in with the law. This incident, in which he was found by police choking a woman-boxer who he formerly had trained, is far too ugly to be cast in anything but the darkest light, and it makes Roger Mayweather, who once came off on 24-7 as lovable but dangerous, seem merely dangerous, hideously so, utterly criminal and otherwise unredeemed.

I sense, however, that both Floyd’s braintrust and HBO will be able to find a way to keep the Roger story from completely overshadowing the task at hand. And I see that potentially happening in one very definitive way. If Floyd really wants to take a sure path towards making this fight enormous, and if he wants to immediately supersede any other news that surrounds him or his camp or the fight as it is posited right now, he has it in his power to do so.

All he has to do, with his inimitable gusto, is insult the honor of Mexican boxers, Mexican people, and Mexico itself. Then, oh man … then all hell would break loose.

This to me is the x-factor in the Pacquiao/Cotto vs. Mayweather/Marquez war at the box office, the puncher’s chance, the one reason why, if you gave me the opportunity right now at even money, I still wouldn’t bet on Pac/Cotto doing better PPV numbers than Floyd/Marquez. No one in boxing today (and no one since Duran, I would argue) is so gifted and compelling a villain as Floyd Mayweather. I’ve written at length on this topic before. Floyd wears the black hat with effortless and contagious spirit, and he has built his current fame on the fact that people love to hate him, and watch his fights in droves in the hope of seeing him catch a beating, just as they did in the early 60’s with a Louisville loudmouth named Cassius Clay.

Highlighted by the fact that Mexico City, as the site of Marquez’s training camp, will play a starring role in this upcoming 24/7, if Floyd goes out of his way to insult Mexico and Mexicans on the show, it will do for the fight what Marquez himself probably can’t – bring the Mexican fight-fan masses into the pay-per-view equation in a big way. Marquez has never quite connected with the Mexican fight community in the way of his iconic peers, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera. But if suddenly he were fighting for the honor of his country against a trash-talking dissmaster on the order of Floyd, well, Marquez would be transformed into a national icon in a heartbeat.

And even beyond the way it would mobilize the Mexican public, should Floyd choose to hate on Mexico in the lead-up to this fight, it would immediately cast the bout as a classic contest of good versus evil on the grandest scale. As for the effects of that on the American scene, I don’t know if you’ve taken a look at a Hollywood blockbuster lately, but cartoonish struggles between the forces of light and the forces of darkness tend to rake in beaucoup bucks at the box office these days. And the more cartoonish, the better. Americans like their good guys good, and their bad guys baaaaaaaaaaad, and our man Floyd can really deliver on that front. How much badder could he get than aiming some gutter-mouthed low-blows at a noble, hard-working, dignified Mexican like Marquez?

I admit that such a strategy would be a bold move for Mayweather, but on the other hand, what does he have to lose? Based on the PR work he’s done to this point in his career, he’s already going to be the bad guy in this fight, and if he wins it, he’s likely going to be the even badder guy in his next fight, which most would expect to be Manny Pacquiao (should he get past Cotto). Pac Man has the good guy market cornered at the moment and for the foreseeable future. At this point, let’s face it – a Pacquiao/Mayweather fight is pretty much Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader territory as far as the public consciousness goes.

That’s why I would not be at all surprised to see Floyd, who always has been bold as bold can be, say “damn the torpedoes” and go for the Mexican jugular in the upcoming 24/7 series, thereby transforming what so far has been a ho-hum promotion into a barnburner. In this emerging battle between Pacquiao/Cotto and Mayweather/Marquez, it would indeed be a very dirty tactic on Floyd’s end, and yet on the other hand, it may be his only shot at scoring a knockout in a fight where right now his opponent seems to hold all the advantages.

Floyd Mayweather: Is there a change on the horizon?

Everybody wants to be loved. Even the baddest of the bad and the meanest of the mean. Make no mistake about it. You may have built up your tough guy persona, but deep inside everyone longs for that pat on the back.
Is this the year that Floyd Mayweather turns the corner and actually tries to be embraced by boxing fans? He is very talented with lightning quick reflexes, but something is lacking. His style is not exactly fan friendly or given to result in fight of the year type bouts.
Team Mayweather have made subtle changes throughout the years It started when he appeared on Dancing With The Stars. It was a calculated risk to show Floyd's softer side. It may have worked on the casual fan, but the diehard still had their doubts.
He then proceeded to praise the just defeated Ricky Hatton. This may have been done in hopes of bringing some of Ricky's fans over to his side. But Hatton fans like brawling so it was doubtful that any of his fans would have been glued to the television for Mayweather's next fight.
Now Floyd can be seen on HBO's 24/7. Floyd did not diss Marquez in the first installment. This may also have been calculated. As was the shot of Floyd delivering meals to the homeless. This may be good for his image, but it will not win over boxing fans.
So what will win over some fans? The answer is threefold.
First, stop with all of the braggadocio. Boxers fight and are expected to say how they will beat their opponent. But nobody wants to hear someone constantly say how great they are. It is like a petulant child screaming out for attention. It may have been cute once, now it is old and irritating. Nobody cares how much money you throw around. Again that only shows a lack of maturity.
Secondly, if you are going to talk the talk, then walk the walk. In the De La Hoya-Mayweather 24/7, all anyone heard was how you were going to whip Oscar's butt. Only in more graphic and vulgar terms. But once you were in the ring you became the same old pitty pat, defensive minded Floyd. There is a reason no one wanted to see De La Hoya-Mayweather 2. It was because the first fight was such a snoozefest. If you fought every fight like you did against Gatti and Corrales then you would have a growing legion of fans. But that Floyd is never seen anymore.
Third, fight the best. Hatton made you work. Marquez will do the same. But you are a welterweight so fight a true welter. Names like Mosley, Cotto and even Margarito have been out there for years. Stop crying about the money and get these fights done. It would be a natural for you, if you beat Marquez, to fight the Pacquiao-Cotto winner. If it all falls into place and you say no because of money then you lose all credibility with the diehard boxing fan. Even a five year old can talk a good fight. Legends get it done.
It is not like the boxing world is asking a leopard to change it's spots. We are only asking for a little more action and a little less talk. There is a reason Pacquiao, Cotto and Hatton have such large followings. It is because they are like their fans. Just an average guy doing their job. They don't make their fans feel as if they are beneath them.
So, this might be the year Floyd joins the party. Or he could act like the spoiled kid and bring the party to a screeching halt.

Mayweather/Pacquiao: The fight the fans deserve

2009 hasn’t been an enjoyable year for fight fans. Save for the fireworks of Marquez/Diaz, there has been little to excite the boxing public this year. Set aside that fight, and possibly Clottey/Cotto and 2009 has been mostly a tale of poor cards and cancellations. In February, HBO charged almost $50 for fans to see Miguel Cotto and Kelly Pavlik crush overmatched opponents.

Then in May, Ricky Hatton fought Manny Pacquiao in a fight that last under six minutes and had a very boring undercard. Summer looked promising with the return of Floyd Mayweather and the intriguing Klitschko vs. Haye bout, but they were just two of many fights that fell apart for one reason or another during the season. Now we head into the Fall with the rescheduled Mayweather/Marquez and the mouthwatering Pacquiao/Cotto.

However the public don’t seem to care much for Floyd’s return and seem unwilling to pay to watch him fight a blown up Juan Manuel Marquez, supported by a very average undercard. Presumably due to poor PPV sales, the fight will now be shown in movie theaters, proving the boxing public has become disgruntled and unwilling to fork out huge sums to watch mismatches during recessionary times.

Expect Pacquiao/Cotto to destroy Mayweather/Marquez at box office and also expect Mayweather to make up an imaginary PPV figure so he can still self proclaim himself as the “cash cow” of boxing. I do believe that Mayweather at heart thinks Pacquiao is too big a risk to fight, and doesn’t plan to fight him in 2010. However, once the PPV numbers come in I think Mayweather will realize he has to step up to the challenge, otherwise no one will watch him.

Pacquiao/Mayweather is the fight everyone is talking about, Floyd recently gave an interview and spent far more time discussing Pacquiao than his future opponent Marquez. Also, Freddie Roach has admitted he is frequently quizzed over the potential match up.

If Mayweather gets by Marquez (which I firmly believe he will) and Pacquiao gets by Cotto, then there will be uproar if the next fight doesn’t see the two square off. If the “Pretty Boy” was really the cash cow he could fight whoever to wants to, knowing people will tune in just to see him fight.

If this were the case he could continue with low risk opponents, I’d say Berto is about the biggest challenge he’d face. However once Floyd knows in his heart that you cannot con boxing fans during recessionary times, he just might step up to the plate.

The negotiations will be long and tedious, but if people uses their brains they will find a way to cash in on this potential box office smash. It is without doubt the biggest fight since De La Hoya/Trinidad, and after the horrible year that we’ve had so far in 2009, it is a reassuring thought to know something massive might be on the horizon in 2010.

Much speculation has brewed recently in the underground Puerto Rican community about the odds of Miguel Cotto finding himself on the opposite end of a 'gift decision'. After so many times where many thought he unfairly got the nod, (Clottey and Mosley fights), there's room to believe that streak may finally end, giving him a dose of the same unfortunate reality. This seems impossible when you consider that Cotto isn't gonna be as easy to hit (or find) as many people think, making it somewhat harder to score a fight in Pacquiao's favor. Dela Hoya and Hatton were easy targets, and neither has ever been known to have even a little bit of defense, but Cotto (on the other hand) has learned quite well how to slip quick punches, and his fights against Mosley, Judah, and Malignaggi, all speak this truth. With the world literally awaiting a Pacquiao/Mayweather showdown, is there truth to the growing speculation of those who wonder if Cotto can actually get a points victory in this fight? We know he's gonna be the aggressor, as Pacquaio won't make the mistake of trying to walk him down for 12rds. We know that he (Cotto) has basically all of the size related advantages coming into the fight. We know that he brings the power advantage into the fight as well, but what difference does all that make in the end if the true money fight hinges on the victory of his opponent? Hopefully this is all speculation and not reality. A poor decision on the biggest stage the sport has seen in years would be fatal to a sport many think is already on its last leg. Stay tuned.

Pacquiao Gives Mayweather The Nod

The pending Mayweather/Marquez showdown places Filipino Manny Pacquiao in a very odd position. As the sports current P4P king, it's an odd position for him to be on the outside looking in, but in this rare occasion, he finds himself right there as he awaits a showdown between two men who need no introduction to him at all. In Marquez, you have arguably the only man in recent times to fully dissect and comprehend 'Mount Manny'; and across from him, you have Mayweather, a man who many view as the only person capable of soundly defeating him. With two men who could play a strong role in Pacquiao's immediate future waging war against one another, who does the Pac-ster like in the end?......Floyd Mayweather jr. Now, could this be simply an acknowledgment of Pacquiao that Mayweather is the 'best man'? Or is this just a nudge at his old nemesis in their post-war aftermath? Perhaps we'll never know, but despite the fact that Pacquiao won't be ringside when they fight, what we do know is that he's highly interested in the outcome. Many have made an issue about how many people will tune in to watch the Mayweather/Marquez showdown, but when you have the attention of the biggest name in the in all fighting sports and he's tuned in with a vested interest, I dont think it really matters?

Marvin Sonsona: The Next Manny Pacquiao????

For such a small man, Manny Pacquiao has played a huge role in putting the Filipino nation on the map. In America, basketball legend Michael Jordan became the measuring stick, or more recently perhaps Tiger Woods, but these guys only represent a sport. In the Filipino nation, Pacquiao has become the face of ALL sports. Literally the entire nation. Keeping that in mind, it's pretty intriguing that many in the Filipino nation have gone on record lately to say that 19 year old Marvin Sonsona (14-0, 12KO's) will be the 'next' Manny Pacquiao. He may have an awesome ability to put backs-on-mats and earn victories, but becoming the next Pacquiao.....I'm not quite sure he'll defeat those odds. With his youth, great talent, and buzz appeal, it'll be interesting to watch and find out, though.

Khan vs Pacquiao: A 'Wildcard' Wildcard???

Recent reports shed light on the fact that an Amir Khan/Manny Pacquiao was a strong possibility before Cotto agreed in principle to face Pacquiao. Khan has come a long way, but perhaps he has never had a greater time to be thankful for his Dad, as he was the resisting force that ultimately stepped in and said his son wasn't yet "ready" for such a challenge. Khan has looked his best since joining Freddie Roach, but considering the fact that Roach's main charge (Pacquiao) would have retained his services in that fight, many think there's absolutely no chance Khan would have a chance! With Pacquiao considering a political future and soon a retirement from the sport, perhaps this bout will never happen. But a loss to Cotto and a new found demand for a Cotto/Mayweather showdown would leave Khan and Marquez as Pacquiao's biggest options remaining. The odds of it happening don't look too great, but we're often reminded in this sport....stranger things have happened. Stay tuned.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.: Isn't it great to see Floyd Jr. and Floyd Sr. keeping the peace? Watching them roll the dice, argue about who's muscles are bigger, and compete at the fast rope, was classic. Sucks that ego's tend to divide those who should rightfully be together, but now that they are back again, one has to wonder how much can will this all really help the Jr. Mayweather? He's already undefeated, so is it fathomable that he could even be better than what he was before he left? He seems to think so, and if he can back it up, things are really about to get interesting. In less than two weeks we'll all find out.

Juan Manuel Marquez: 'Mr. Peebody' Goes To The Edge For An 'Edge'

HBO's most recent 24/7 series gave many fight fans a glimpse of perhaps the most gross spectacle seen on reality tv in quite some time. We've seen people eat beetles and bugs, we've seen people jump in hot water, and we've seen people do some wild things in this reality tv driven society, but watching Marquez suck down freshly cracked quail eggs, and follow that act with drinking a cup of his own urine made many wanna reach for the remote and hit the off button! Can someone remind this dude that there are far better ways to replenish lost vitamins? I've spent many days visiting the poverty stricken streets of Mexico, but this guy comes from a highly educated background and I'm sure it takes no genius to locate the nearest GNC...Or at least the Mexican version of it, anyway! I love the guy as a fighter and supported him before many around the sport took note of him, but if this is what it takes to fight your butt off, yet still come up short in two of the most important fights of your life, I'd hate to know what he'd actually do to win! (Maybe a Pacquiao trilogy isn't such a great idea)...

Clottey/Mosley: Case of the A-B-C's......As In 'Another Bad Creation' For Clottey's Career?

Joshua Clottey has been one of the best fighters the loaded welterweight division has had to offer in recent years. That being said, despite his great talent, his results haven't always met the mark. Against Antonio Margarito, it was an injured hand that was rumored to have slowed him down. Against Miguel Cotto, is was poor score calling. They say the third time's the charm, but in this case, it's feasible to believe that things may not end up so 'sweet' (pun intended). 'Sugar' Shane Mosley presents more speed, more experience, and arguably more power than any of those fighters, and being more of a fan fave and popular name in the sport, you have to wonder if this fight will also result in another tall order that forces the humble Ghana native to come up short? No doubt, his matchmakers haven't done him many favors. One can only hope that the best man wins, regardless.

Jermain Taylor: Houston To Germany...Non-Stop

The city of Miami is known for many things. Water, sunshine, bikini clad Latina's who pack all the ass-sets (clear my throat), and a lot of celebs. With everyone who is someone trying to call the magic city home, one former resident (Jermain Taylor) has found a new place to lay his head at night. Citing too many distractions in South Beach, (shocker???), Taylor has decided to make Houston, Texas his home base as he prepares for German great Arthur Abraham. Taylor recently spoke of how running out of gas down the stretch in basically all of his key fights of the past, and facing a man who's a world-class conditioned cyclist, there's no question energy and stamina will be a basic necessity in this fight. Deciding to stop partying on South Beach usually means a man has gotten a bit older. In this case, it could be precisely what the doctor ordered - as it relates to Taylor's chances of having the required youthful energy to defeat a great man who'll be standing across from him.

Boxing trying to reach out to new consumers for pay-per-view buys

NEW YORK — When a young Evander Holyfield fought an aged George Foreman nearly 20 years ago, there wasn't much publicity necessary. A few press tours, some television ads, and some carefully crafted newspaper stories generated plenty of interest.

To the tune of 1.4 million pay-per-view buys.

Even today, when big fights are synonymous with the buy-for-battle format, Holyfield-Foreman remains one of the top 10 boxing events in terms of viewership. The reasons it has rarely been trumped are many and varied, from waning interest in the sport to stagnant promotions, to the sheer number of alternatives for the casual sports fan.

These days, traditional means of promoting a big fight are not enough.

"Boxing has to reach a younger audience, a new audience," HBO Sports vice president Mark Taffett said Wednesday. "We need to connect them to the athletes to move the sport forward."

Golden Boy Promotions and HBO understand this, and are embarking on a marketing blitz unlike anything the sport has seen in recent years, focused on raising awareness for Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s fight against Juan Manuel Marquez on Sept. 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The fight figures to be one of the year's most entertaining, carried by the erstwhile pound-for-pound champion's return from a brief retirement. Mayweather (39-0, 25 KOs) has been involved in some of the biggest promotions in boxing history, including his record-setting fight against Oscar De La Hoya, while Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KOs) is backed by a feverish Hispanic fanbase.

The difficulty comes in getting their message out to a broad prospective audience, something that boxing has struggled with for decades. The interests of the 40-something sect are far different from the tech-savvy teen; blue-collar workers and urban youth have little in common.

The trick is to attach the fight, and the sport itself, to something that interests them.

"I really try to come up with ways to do things differently, and be it from the sponsor integration and things like that, we need to look at how we can expose the fights to the largest number of people," said Richard Schaefer, chief executive of Golden Boy. "Where do you have captive audiences? Where can I get this message to these locations?"

Already, the often-bombastic and sometimes-belligerent Mayweather has guest-hosted WWE's "Monday Night Raw." There's the popular HBO reality series "24/7," which takes an inside look at the two fighters' training camps leading up to the bout. Then there's social networks like Facebook and Twitter, online media buys, mobile marketing and rich media online ad units.

The fight also will be shown in about 170 theatres nationwide, and as part of that activation, trailers have been showing on about 1,500 screens before feature film attractions.

Ticket sales and overall response to Mayweather-Marquez has generally been lukewarm, especially compared to other big fights, like Manny Pacquiao's highly anticipated bout against Miguel Cotto slated for November.

Bob Arum of Top Rank is likewise raising the bar for Pacquiao-Cotto, a fight that is especially important to him as the promoter of both fighters. Press conferences are planned for several ballparks, beginning with Yankee Stadium on Thursday, and Pacquiao will be the honorary captain for the Oakland Raiders against the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 18.

One company, which Arum declined to name, has committed US$6 million to sponsor the bout.

"The more people you can get, the better," Arum said Wednesday. "We're looking to do 1.5 million to 2 million buys on this fight, and it looks like we have a shot to do it."

The main sponsors of the Mayweather-Marquez card have been carefully chosen to hit specific target audiences. Affliction Clothing is popular among young men, Quaker State motor oil and Dewalt tools appeal to blue-collar workers. Tecate beer is popular among Hispanics, and AT&T and Southwest Airlines help to target mainstream sports fans.

Golden Boy and HBO are spending about $20 million to market the broadcast, which officials at both companies hope serves as a blueprint for future megafights.

It's a big gamble in what is undoubtedly big business.

Since the Holyfield-Foreman fight, HBO has put on more than 150 pay-per-view events, generating 44 million buys and about $2.1 billion in revenue. Mayweather's fight against De La Hoya two years ago generated $136.6 million in one night, more than twice what the popular Batman film "The Dark Knight" brought in on its opening night.

Although reaching those kind of numbers is unlikely for Mayweather-Marquez, Schaefer said he expects it to be among the biggest pay-per-view events of the year, even going up against a UFC pay-per-view event from Dallas the same night.

"These are two great fighters, we've created a great event, the best undercard top to bottom in recent history," Schaefer said. "We want to give the fan a great night of entertainment."

Pacquiao to fans: Don’t worry, training will come later

MANILA -- For Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, his showdown with Puerto Rican champion Miguel Cotto is still far away.

The pound-for-pound king has several commitments to attend to aside from finishing his film project. He said these things, however, should not cause his fans to worry.

“Don't worry, we have plenty of time and we have enough. Everything is under control,” said Pacquiao in his column “Kumbinasyon”, which is published in PhilBoxing.com and Abante.

Pacquiao is due to fight Cotto, the reigning WBO welterweight king, on November 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The Puerto Rican fighter is considered as the "Pacman's" toughest opponent to date.

“Marami pa namang oras ang nakalaan sa pag-train para sa isa sa pinakamahirap na laban ng aking career,” said Pacquiao.

The boxer said although he is having some fun with his projects, he sometimes gets tired with his engagements, too.

Pacquiao said he thinks his current undertakings can be more difficult than boxing.

“Minsan nga, parang mas madali ang pagboboksing dahil ito ang aking nakasanayan at talaga,” he said.

Unlike Pacquiao, Cotto has already begun working on his conditioning for the November 14 fight.

Cotto started his training at the Abner “Pin” Cotto Boxing Gym in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico “establish a pre-training condition.”

He will undergo full training sessions beginning August 24.

Pacquiao’s coach, Freddie Roach, said he is looking for another eight-week training camp to fully prepare his ward against the bigger Cotto.

Roach said he wants Pacquiao to begin training sometime in September.

Cotto to use ‘good defense’ against Pacquiao

FILIPINO Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao’s vaunted speed is the only thing that worries him, according to world welterweight champion Miguel Cotto when defends his title against the Filipino pound-for-pound king on November 14.

But Cotto said “good defense” would be his answer to Pacquiao’s speed, indicating he would use the ring and his boxing skills in his coming mega fight at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.

“Pacquiao has to fight another welterweight, if he wants a seventh title,” Cotto said in an interview with Puerto Rican daily Primera Hora.

The Puerto Rican puncher-boxer declined to predict the outcome of the title fight, but his father-trainer Miguel Sr. confidently forecasted that Pacquiao would go down once his son connects “with the right punches.”

Cotto, 27, started training in the first week of August in preparation for a long fight against a fellow puncher-boxer like Pacquiao.

For the first time Cotto confirmed that his World Boxing Organization welterweight belt would be on the line at the 145 pound agreed weight, an agreement forged only last week.

Cotto said he was offered “additional guarantees and benefits” to defend his title. He earlier insisted that he would only risk his belt if the fight were held at the regular welterweight standard of 147 pounds.

While showing tremendous respect for Pacquiao, Cotto said he does not think Pacquiao could overcome his physical advantage and strength, which he added would be the key to his victory.

Filipino ring physician Allan Recto of Laredo, Texas said the slick Puerto Rican flyweight champion Ivan Calderon has offered to spar with Cotto to help hone his compatriot’s defense against the fast-fisted Pacquiao.

“I am also a fast southpaw just like Manny Pacquiao,” said Calderon, who has a rematch with Filipino challenger Rodel Mayol on September 12 in San Juan, Puerto. “We are just entertaining that as a possibility, nothing’s definite yet.”

Pacquiao and Cotto, who are scheduled to hold a press conference in San Juan, are expected to be at ringside during the September 12 fight, a logical sequel to the recent Calderon-Mayol title fight that ended in a technical draw due to an accidental headbutt.

Asked for his prediction on Pacquiao-Cotto, Calderon said: “It’s going to be a hard fight for both but I think Cotto will win. It will be Miguel Cotto. He still got the energy, he’s young, he has the spirit, and his boxing skills are better. Cotto has the heart of a true champion.

Pacquiao/Cotto: A test of fair play

In recent days, there have been growing speculations among certain fight fans that if the fight were to come down to the judges at hands, Miguel Cotto could very well end up on the short end of the stick.

There are several reasons why this belief exist, but the two which hold the most weight can be attributed to a few facts that seem to find a way to test greater logic.

The not-so-obvious reason is the fact that Cotto recently received a decision over Joshua Clottey which many fight fans found to be highly controversial, and based on that outcome, there seems to be a concern that scoring officials will be far less likely to give the nod to the Puerto Rican under similar circumstances, avoiding the possibility of any appearance of favortism.

The second, and clearly more obvious concern is the fact that the true fight EVERYONE wants to see is the one that would pair Mayweather against Pacquiao, and with a Mayweather victory over Marquez, the concern is that the pressure quickly mounts to ensure that Pacquiao seals the deal as well.

The reality of the matter is that those who believe there's some type of 'fix' in the making, (despite raising valid points), probably need to remember a few things.

For one, the stage that these two men will find themselves on the evening of November 14th will be far too grand for the sport to make such a mistake with the world watching. Secondly, when you pair Paccquiao's power and Cotto's strength, as hard as it is to consider either man being KO'd, the reality is that there's a zero chance that this fight won't end within the distance.

Raising concern is one thing, but what isn't too popular about the questions being raised is that it provides excuses where there should be none.

Be they true or false, both men will enter the ring accutely aware of what they have to do to win. As "Iron" Mike Tyson once said, "a fighters mindset going into any fight should be to take the decision out of a judges hands". KO'ing the opponent in this fight won't be a walk in the park, but hey, welcome to the big leagues fella's....Nobody ever said it would be easy!

Cotto ‘victim’ predicts Pacquiao knockout

MANILA, Philippines – He has yet to feel the power of Manny Pacquiao, but Paulie Malignaggi is convinced the Filipino superstar can’t measure up against Puerto Rican icon Miguel Cotto when they tangle on November 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Malignaggi went as far as predicting that Cotto, who beat him by unanimous decision three years ago, would knock Pacquiao out and retain his World Boxing Organization welterweight crown.

In an interview with Rick Reeno of BoxingScene.com, Malignaggi paid tribute to Cotto’s strength by saying that he “hits like a beast.”

This despite Cotto’s inability to put him down when they tangled on June 10, 2006 at the Madison Square Garden in New York.

According to Malignaggi, the Puerto Rican (34-1 with 27 KOs) is simply “too big and too strong” for Pacquiao, the pound-for-pound king, who is a 2-1 favorite in early betting odds.

Unconvinced of Pacquiao’s punching power, Malignaggi even suggested that South African Joshua Clottey, who was narrowly beaten by Cotto last June 13, could also knock Pacquiao out.

Of course, Cotto is also convinced that Pacquiao doesn’t have the physical attributes to topple him even at the catch weight of 145 pounds.

In an interview with Puerto Rican newspaper Primera Hora on Friday, Cotto said his only concern about Pacquiao was his speed although he noted that he could neutralize it with a “good defense.”

Cotto, who started his preparations for the megabuck pay-per-view bout on August 3 in his hometown in Caguas, Puerto Rico, added that Pacquiao must look elsewhere if he wants an unprecedented seventh world title at 147 pounds.

The Pacquiao-Cotto showdown, which is also for the newly created World Boxing Council Diamond Belt, is already a guaranteed blockbuster with only a few $750 and $1000 tickets up for grabs.

To further drum up interest, chief promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank announced that Pacquiao and Cotto will embark on a four-city press tour starting on September 10 in New York, September 12 in Caguas, September 13 in San Francisco and September 14 in Los Angeles.

Roach worried Manny hasn't started training

MANILA - US boxing coach Freddie Roach has expressed concern about Manny Pacquiao’s hectic schedule outside of boxing.

He said Pacquiao’s fight against WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto should not be taken lightly as they expect the Puerto Rican to be in his best condition.

"Anyone who thinks this fight is easy is a fool. He's going to be at his best," said Roach.

“I've been studying this guy, watching his fights, I have a good strategy in mind and we just have to implement it now,” he added.

The boxing Hall of Famer said that up to now, they still have no definite plan and date on Pacquiao's training.

Roach said the last time he has talked with Pacquiao was three weeks ago.

"I'm a little pissed off to be honest with you [about] the lack of communication,” he said.

Koncz blamed

Roach is blaming this communication gap on Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz.

"I know I'm a realist, I know boxing. Mike Koncz made a comment that we don't need to talk to Freddie, he's only the trainer. Well, Mike Koncz, I'm the only one in the [Pacquiao] camp that knows boxing and knows the sport,” said the trainer.

“If they don't want me to be the trainer anymore, that's fine with me. Do it yourself," Roach said.

Koncz, meanwhile, asked Roach to refrain from publicly discussing such matters about Pacquiao. He added that such an issue should be handled “internally”.

On schedule

He also said that contrary to what Roach thinks, Pacquiao’s training is in fact “on schedule”.

“There are plans for Manny, everything is on schedule. Manny started jogging on Monday, he will start training in Baguio for one week after the presscon,” said Koncz.

He said the Pacquiao-Cotto match will be publicly announced through an official press conference on Sept. 10.

“We will fly out the 9th and from then we wait for Manny to decide where to set up the camp,” he said.

Koncz also assured that the plans for the training camp will be between Roach and Pacquiao.

“With regards to strategy and training, yes, he is the trainer and we don’t know boxing, he's right there. So we leave it up to him and Manny to fix those things,” he said.

According to Pacquiao’s chief-of-staff, Jake Joson, the top pound-for-pound fighter is currently shooting his film in Manila. With reports from Joseph Pimentel and TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News

RP training for Pacquiao ruled out

WASHINGTON, D.C.: After considerable indecision on the venue and timing of his training camp, Manny Pacquiao will start training September 15 for his Miguel Cotto super fight, most likely in Toluca, Mexico.

Pacquiao’s trainer Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions ruled out Pacquiao training in the Philippines because that could upset his preparation for what could be the Filipino’s toughest fight.

Arum told Michael Marley of Examiner.com Monday night that Team Pacquaio has also ruled out the Bahamas and the Mexican resort city of Cancun because they are “too flat.”

Marley surmised that this leaves the Toluca mountains, close to Mexico City, as the likely venue for Pacquiao’s training facility.

Ideal for training

Nestled about 8,750 feet above sea level, Toluca—some 2,000 miles from Los Angeles, California—is known for its cool and humid summer weather which is ideal for boxing training camps.

Pacquiao’s training has always included early morning runs on hilly terrain to build up his endurance and stamina.

Pacquiao’s renowned trainer Freddie Roach earlier said training in the Philippines would be a “mistake because Manny could never focus on training in his country where so many people want a piece of him.”

Roach said he personally preferred either Toluca or Puerto Vallarta in Mexico because of the mild weather and their proximity to California and Las Vegas.

Roach said that Pacquiao will spend the final three weeks of his projected eight-week training camp at Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, California for two weeks, and the final week in Las Vegas.

Toluca, the capital of Mexico State is about 65 miles from Mexico City, the federation’s capital. Located in the mountains of Toluca Valley, the place offers pleasant summer weather.

Last week, Roach blew his top last week over Pacquiao’s indecision on the timing and venue of his training camp.

Tough Cotto fight

Roach underscored the need for focused preparation by Pacquiao against Cotto, 28, a big and strong 147- pounder, who has beaten the likes of Shane Mosley, a fast-fisted puncher boxer just like Pacquiao.

“[Cotto] nullified Shane’s speed with his own speed. People tell me he’s slow, but I disagree. He’s a tough, tough fight for us,” Roach told FightHype.com. “I hope that Manny and his crew wake up and smell the coffee and get to work of picking a place so we can go to camp as soon as possible.”

But Arum said he is “not panicking” about Pacquiao’s preparation for the Filipino’s title shot at Cotto’s World Boxing Organization welterweight championship belt, although he admitted time was “really tight” for his prized fighter.

“I know Manny, we spoke this morning. I gave him the bad news [about the death of] Freddie’s younger brother, Joey, and Manny was really shaken up,” Arum said. “He later reached out to Freddie to express his condolences. Manny was totally unaware of it. He’d been shooting a movie or a TV show or something like that.”

Arum said he shared Roach’s concern about setting up training camp in the Philippines because of its too many distractions for the country’s most popular athlete.

Unlike Pacquiao, Cotto started light training as early as the first week of August before embarking on an 11-week training camp in Puerto Rico and winding up in Tampa, Florida.

The venue for training was never an issue in most of the major fights of Pacquiao, who normally trained at Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Hollywood.

But under a regulation of the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Pacquiao stands to pay millions in additional taxes if he holds his entire training camp for the November 14 fight with Cotto on American soil.

Under the IRS Substantial Presence Test, Pacquiao has nearly reached the limit of his maximum allowable stay in the US for non-US residents.

This means that if Pacquiao stays and trains in the US for more than three weeks for the remainder of this year, he would be subject to higher taxes since all his sources of income worldwide would be subject to tax.

Pacquiao rules out early training

Manny Pacquiao on Wednesday said he worries being burned out if he trains too early and explained that an eight-week training before his fight has been tried, tested and proven to be successful.

Pacquiao made this comment when asked why he has not hit the gym while his opponent, Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto, has been training for weeks.

“When I train more than eight weeks, I get burned out," said Pacquiao during the formal launch of Head and Shoulders shampoo, which he is an endorser at the Renaissance Hotel in Makati.

“But when I train less than eight weeks, I feel that I don't get the perfect condition,” said Pacquiao, who battles Cotto on November 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao said he will report to the gym upon his arrival from a five-city press and promotional tour of the fight beginning on September 10 at Yankee Stadium in New York.

From the Big Apple, Pacquiao will fly to Puerto Rico for another gig on the 12th and then onwards to San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego in the next few days.

Pacquiao will leave for the tour on September 9.

Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach had been calling out his fighter to decide right away as to the venue of his training camp, adding that the high-altitude conditions of Toluca, an hour by land from Mexico City, is an ideal place to set up a training camp.

While Toluca looks like ideal, Pacquiao is also eyeing a secluded residential place in Baguio City.

Informed of Pacquiao’s desire to make Baguio his homebase for training, Philippine Sports Commission chairman Harry Angping said he will make sure the boxing gym located inside Teacher’s Camp will be secured to ensure that Pacquiso stays focused during his workouts.

Cotto has been in training the past month in Puerto Rico, a sign that the 28-year-old puncher is not just after the hefty paycheck that comes with fighting somebody like Pacquiao.

Cotto is far more advanced than Pacquiao at this point in terms of training that he has kicked off his sparring sessions.

Still, Pacquiao believes eight weeks is more than enough to whip himself up into form against the rugged and dangerous Cotto.

“I will come in prepared as always,” said Pacquiao.

Arum unfazed by alleged Pacquiao-Roach conflict

MANILA, Philippines – Promoter Bob Arum isn't pressing the panic button amid reports of problems between boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and his corner man Freddie Roach regarding the boxer’s training plans for his fight with Miguel Cotto in November.

It has been widely reported that Pacquiao, currently the world’s best boxer, is planning to set up camp in Baguio City — something that did not go too well with Roach, who cited distractions that come whenever his prized ward trains in the Philippines.

Pacquiao must train all but three weeks outside the United States for the bulk of camp to avoid being taxed heavily. Roach, for his part, offered a secluded resort in Toluca, Mexico, as an alternative.

But the bespectacled trainer bared he’s having problems reaching Pacquiao, saying his calls were being blocked by members of the boxer’s inner circle. Roach even went as far as threatening to quit as Pacquiao’s trainer.

“If they don’t want me to be the trainer anymore that’s fine with me. Do it yourself,” he told the Asian Journal in a previous interview.

Despite this, Arum — who is promoting the Pacquiao-Cotto fight — remains unfazed, saying he will just stay at the sidelines and “try to keep peace.”

“This always happens with a big, superstar fighter,” Arum told The Ring. “People around him want to protect their territory. Manny loves Freddie but he’s also loyal to these guys as well. When Manny is in training camp, Freddie’s the boss. These guys don’t want Freddie to be the boss when he’s not in training. They think that usurps their territory.”

“I just sit back, watch it all and try to keep peace. I try not to get too excited,” the ageless promoter added.

Arum, 77, also came to the rescue of boxing agent Michael Koncz, Pacquiao’s close aide who reportedly is the one blocking Roach’s calls to the boxer.

Koncz, a Canadian, was even quoted as telling Pacquiao: “You don’t have to talk to Freddie Roach. He’s just the trainer.”

“(Koncz) is a good guy in a thankless position,” Arum said. “When Manny says something, he has to jump, to make it happen.”

Pacquiao, meanwhile, has arrived in New York City to kick-off the cross-country, five-city media tour to drum up interest in his bout with Cotto. He will reportedly take part in a press conference at the historic Yankee Stadium tomorrow.
